Rao Makineni Lectureship
The Rao Makineni Lectureship recognizes an individual who has made a recent, within two years of the nomination deadline, contribution of unusual merit to research in the field of peptide science, and who is recognized as an accomplished speaker. This award is intended to recognize original and singular discoveries rather than cumulative or lifetime contributions.
Named in honor of Rao Makineni, this lectureship is endowed by PolyPeptide Laboratories and Murray and Zelda Goodman, and celebrates researchers who bridge the gap between fundamental research and real-world applications of peptide science.

Dr. Murray Goodman, did more than perhaps any other individual to unite peptide chemists into a single scientific family. Born in Brooklyn in 1928, he joined UC San Diego in 1970 and held the endowed Goodman Chair there until his death. He co-founded and edited Biopolymers and Peptide Science, the Society's official journal, served as APS President from 2001 to 2003, and authored nearly 500 papers. His truest measure, though, was his people: more than 80 doctoral students and 200 postdoctoral fellows trained in his laboratory, many of whom became leaders across the field. Goodman died in Munich on June 1, 2004, during a scientific visit. His wife of more than fifty years, Zelda, carried that legacy forward by endowing the Murray Goodman Scientific Excellence and Mentorship Award in 2007.
