Faculty Positions Available

Torrey Pines Institute of Molecular Studies and Florida International Univeristy

If you would like more information you may contact Richard Houghten during the 26th APS Meeting in Monterey (houghten@tpims.org).  He will be in Monterey for the entire meeting.

Florida Internationa University’s (FIU) the Biomolecular Sciences Institute (BSI) and the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies (TPIMS)  invite applications to fill fifteen full-time faculty positions to support establishment of a translational medicinal chemistry and chemical biology program at TPIMS.  Specific types of faculty positions will vary based on experience and expertise. Successful candidates will hold a primary position in colleges and departments that are part of FIU’s Academic Health Center. Such departments mauy be Chemistry and Biochemistry in the School of Integrated Science and Humanity, or in the Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Environment, Arts and Society, in the  College of Arts, Sciences & Education; as well as departments in the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, and the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Woek. Regardless of primary departmental assignment, these positions will be integrated with FIU’s Academic Health Center, which includes the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing, the School of Integrated Science and Humanity, and the Department of Biomedical Engineeering. Primary consideration will be given to candidates who can direct a research program in applying chemistry and chemical biology to accelerate discovery of novel small molecules that can provide cures, relief of pathological symptoms or protection from disease. Successful candidates will be expected to have and maintain a strong research program (external funding, peer-reviewed scholarly work, national/international collaborations), and to mentor graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. Fractional salary support may be available, with candidates expected to fund a substantial portion of their salary once established.  Primary location will be at the TPIMS site in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

These positions will accelarete FIU’s translational research, drug discovery and basic research efforts leading to the cure of diseases in areas of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.  BSI’s research has focused on facilitating multidisciplinary research and currently has collaborations that include the study of genomic stability and stress response, discovery and development of novel biosensors for detecting predictive biomarkers and the discovery of new medicines or interventions for treatment or prevention of diseases, including infectious diseases, cancer and neurological disorders. Founded 30 years ago, TPIMS’ research focused on the development of methods that accelerate the preparation of very large numbers of individual compounds. Additionally, TPIMS researchers have invented a wide range of highly diverse synthetic chemical scaffolds for use in the drug discovery process. These effort have been realized, and when combined, permit the ready searching through literally 10s of millions compounds, while only requiring the actual screening of 300-500 samples. Importantly, this can be accomplished in virtually any existing bench top assay with little to no modification of the assay.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply to Job Opening ID 516691 at facultycareers.fiu.edu and submit a cover letter stating interest in conducting research at TPIMS, a curriculum vitae that includes information on past and current extramural funding, a statement of research accomplishments and plans, preferably as a single pdf file.  A copy of the file should be emailed to BSI@fiu.edu.  Candidates may be requested to provide names and contact information for at least three references as determined by the search committee, which will begin reviewing applications February 1, 2019, and continue until the positions are filled.
